Instructor Notes:

Introduction

STEM From Dance instructors choreographed a piece to "Mona Lisa" by J-Hope, featuring a picture frame prop embedded with sensors. The instructor selected the frame for its symbolic meaning according to the song’s lyrics and its flexibility in triggering different effects. While seated, she tilts it side to side to activate a specific animation, presses a side button to light up the entire frame during key moments of the song, and uses a bottom button—tapped with her thigh—to trigger an additional animation.

Constructing the base

The dancer cut out a frame from cardboard, with an inward flap to hide the microcontroller and sensors.

Placing the Buttons

The button is placed on the bottom of the flap, so when the dancer taps it on their thigh, it triggers a different color. The other button is placed on the side of the frame, so the dancer can press it with their thumb.

Placing the Tilt Sensor

The tilt sensor is placed on one side of the frame. When it is tilted forward, an animation of 2 green balls play across the LED strips.

Adding Supports

For structural support, the dancers inserted layered cardboard for added weight around the sides and bottom flap.
